I'd actually love to do research on stuff like this. It's totally out of my area and I'm not sure how my colleagues and peers would think if I did something around this, though. I'm also not sure how I'd write a proposal for some kind of funding to do this thing. My Japanese isn't strong enough to do it independently, and being a foreigner (although Asian) would not give me access to a world that already seems pretty closed off (especially with Yazuka presence). Best chance would be to find someone who was already doing stuff on this and asking to work with them.
