Right now I'm going to Japanese classes in community college 5 days a week for about 1 hour a day. It's pretty challenging, but when I go back and look at what we learned, the old chapters seem pretty easier compared to what we're learning now. So it's always a constant learning process, but eventually you get used to the stuff you learn. If you decide to take classes at school, you'll be surrounded by weeaboos, Chinese, and people who bring their Nintendo DS to class, but just remember that your wota is a lot more obscure and weirder than theirs, so don't judge them too hard for it.

I guess my biggest advice is to learn hiragana and katakana first by getting flashcards or whatever, because that's one of the most annoying things to learn at first. Another thing you might want to memorize first too is numbers, dates, and such. It's boring and tedious, but it'll pay off later when you don't have to worry about them so much.

AKB General is pretty much the only thread I follow on 4chan now. I don't even know what goes on in the rest of the site or what the general state of /jp/ is.
