Did you notice how strange are backgrounds in all the stages? in the end it turns out that Reimu is a lonely orphan living in an abandoned shrine, and she invented Gensokyo and all it's residents as her imaginary friends. She lives on alms, so this is where this entire donations stuff came from. also it is obvious that alms are not so much, therefore the box is always empty, and hungry pale Reimu is laying down in the shrine, imagining adventures in a magical world and beautiful festivals with all its inhabitants.

It would be a good ending, in fact. There is no uncertainty, no continuation - full stop. Playtime is over; here it is, reality, spreads out in front you. Go, be part of it, love, suffer, die under this hot and cold sun as your fathers and grandfathers loved and suffered and died and as before them their fathers and grandfathers and fathers and grandfathers of their fathers and grandfathers did. You can run away to your magical country without worries and sorrows, but you can not escape. Your life anyway will find you, gently grab you with ice claws, carefully wrap you in a blanket from dust and bureaucratic waste and swallow you.

Poor Reimu is so tired of loneliness that her imaginary world has become real, but only in her head. She developed schizophrenia. Sometimes her second personality takes control of the body, but as there is still nothing to do in the empty shrine, she lies and dreams, like the hostess of the body. She imagines that she became a witch that flies on a broom, cooks an elixir from mushrooms, steals books and has fun. Her fate is even more unenviable. After all, Reimu has a chance to find a way out, no matter how tiny it is, and Marisa has no chance, and never had, and will not have, she is doomed.

Only the drizzling autumn rain cries for her.

Once, lost in the forest, ZUN came upon an abandoned shrine. And he met there with a strange girl who talked with imaginary friends. Left to spend the night, ZUN listened to the stories of the poor girl, about her fictional adventures. The next morning he left, but even after returning home and drinking a bottle of beer he could not forget the temple in the forest and the girl. And then he decided that he would try to translate the girl's fantasies into reality by the only way available to him - with the help of program code and a graphic tablet. After gaining fame and glory, ZUN repeatedly tried to find that abandoned shrine in the deepest place, but each time failed. And his only dream, his only desire is that sooner or later that lonely girl will see his creations. And smile... maybe.
