Why didn't the "witches" just cast themselves out of the dullest franchise in the history of manga? Seriously, each chapter following the detective wannabe and his relatives from the Ushiromiya family as they die inumerous times has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gory imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of human tricks, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Ryukishi07 vetoed the idea of any serious company being in charge of editing his script; he made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for his novels. The When They Cry series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Philo Vance series in its refusal of wonder, logic and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>a-at least the novels were good though

"No!" The writing is dreadful; the visual novel was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character explained something, the author wrote "詰まり" in the beginning of the sentence.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Ryukishi's mind is so governed by bad habits and needless repetition that he has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Umineko by the same Nasu Kinoko. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Umineko at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Fate/Stay Night." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Umineko" you are, in fact, trained to read Type-Moon.

>Jessica is less cuter in the steam version. She just seems, well, weird.

The bigger the boobs, the less attractive they are.
