If the actual story, setting, and events of Touhou are so dark (insanity, undeath, Hell goddesses, slavery of an entire race, a tree that leads people to their death, deadly insane vampire lolis), why is the aesthetic so... adorable?

Don't get me wrong, I love it, I love the contrast and the artstyle is unique and super cute, but why did ZUN choose to present it in this manner? Is there something deeper to it that I'm missing? Or did he just like cute girls?
