The Touhou difficulty curve is something like this, from 1 to 10.

>Embodiment: 5
The most barebones Touhou. Not too difficult per se, but there are very little features out there to help you.

>PCB: 3
So-so bosses, extremely generous with lives and temporary invulnerabilities.

>Imperishable: 1
Literally easy everything. This is why I always recommend it to beginners.

>Phantasmagoria: 4
It's a competitive danmaku, which means the patterns are completely random. The strategy is more about war of attrition than on the other games though.

>MOF: 5
The bomb-with-power system will fuck you up somewhat if you come from other Touhou games but you'll get the hang of it. Patterns are so-so, there's a fair amount of lives to be grabbed.

>Subterranean: 7
Like a more difficult version of MOF with less lives but with some pretty helpful special powers. Reimu/Suika's semi-homing shot is particularly good for pure survival. And make damn sure you have your herding down to an art and science because you WILL need it for stage 5.

>UFO: 10
You will die. A lot. First you have to learn to ignore the UFOs that are dangerous to grab, then you have to learn to ignore that nasty and irritating *plunk!* that makes you want to go grab them, then you have to learn to ignore these fucking UFOs that are just floating around screaming "GRAB ME, BITCH!", and only then will you be finally ready to tackle these nightmarishly difficult patterns. Would be as easy as Imperishable, but resource-wise it's the stingiest game of the whole lot, and it takes a lot of strain to ignore these fucking spirits.

I just started playing UFO a couple of days ago using Sanae A. This is pic pretty much sums up me playing as I get careless deaths because I get greedy/impatient with grabbing UFOs and power ups. SA kind of spoiled me with its grazing system.

I believe the only people that complain about UFO's are Reimu(casual) players and secondaryfags.

I like that ZUN tries new things with his games, I really do. It keeps things fresh.

The UFO system is very hit and miss. If you are good at it, it's very enjoyable and keeps things challenging. But it can also screw you over by getting you killed trying to get UFOs. Pic super related.

Otherwise UFO was nice aside from the silliness with the power gauge. There are some things which ZUN needs to never ever do again, like Shou's ridiculous spinny card.

This is pretty much how my Sanae runs play like. I'm okay with Reimu and Marisa Normal though.
