Adding to your post, the youkai and gods simply can't thrive on ignorance. You know what too much ignorance leads to? Crime, war, sickness and death. And if all the humans that believe in the youkai and gods die, then so do they. The youkai in particular don't want to coexist with humans- It's in their nature, after all- But they must. Humans are the ones that are feeding them- Literally and rhetorically.

I wonder what would Yukari and Co. do when it's decided that the residents of Gensokyo have advanced further enough to discard their superstitious beliefs. Would a new Gensokyo be made, with new residents? Would they still struggle? Would they reverse back time to happy fun times? I guess that's up to doujinshi artists to find out.
