Arse is such a Disgusting word.
I'd bet if you told a girl about her "Arse" she'd start getting embarrassed about herself

Humiliation anons might sound like they hate a female character to the ears of unenlightened fools. But nobody likes a girl more than those who find her so perfect, they need to desperately look for flaws in order to humanize her. Otherwise, her sheer perfection would be incomprehensible and the fact that they can't fuck her unbearable. And yet, she is so perfect that one needs to reach into the unchangeable, inevitable human condition itself in order to find any kind of imperfection.

Only a 10/10 girl can inspire someone to actually look for her flaws, instead of ignoring them. And ironically, such a girl doesn't have any flaws except those inherent to her human condition. Something she can't do anything about.

In other words, scat is the ultimate humiliation.

Another interesting thing about EP5 is that Erika's piece never heard about Kanon. He and Shannon spend the whole time together and everyone treats them like a single person. This includes Erika, who was probably seeing Shannon the whole time and Kanon didn't exist for her. Her meta version is aware of all the pieces and gets tricked by fake scenes like the one in the parlor, narrated by Battler. But in-universe, within the reality of the gameboard, no Kanon existed for Erika.

Ironically, meta-Erika has no idea about this because she was perceiving the "absolutely everyone is here" scene in the parlor from the meta, through Battler's skewed perspective. That why neither version of Erika noticed Kanon's absence when everyone reunited in the parlor. Meta Erika saw Kanon and Shannon there as part of the fake narration and in-universe Erika only saw Shannon. No other young servant existed on the island as far as she knew, so she agreed that "everyone" except Kinzo was in the parlor.

Not that it matters because there are no Shkanon shenanigans at all in EP5's mystery. And all the adults see only Shannon when she reveals herself as the family head and proposes the plan to frame Natsuhi. The only Shkanon trick in EP5 is just the fact that the audience sees them together the entire fucking time in front of the entire family, making us believe they are different people. But in the gameboard itself, there are no such tricks. Kanon isn't even really there as far as everyone is concerned, he only shows up as part of Yasu in fictional scenes that never took place as depicted, taking turns with Shannon to voice Yasu's lines in order to trick the reader.

Hell, there is even a scene where Erika tells Shannon and Kanon to close the parlor door so she can accuse Natsuhi, and they both say "Yes" with a strange eunuch-ass voice that is neither Shannon's nor Kanon's. It's not even them talking at the same time like in other parts of the episode. It's a single person talking, with a totally unique voice that mixes both of their voices perfectly.

That's probably the only time in the entire series that we get to hear Yasu's natural voice, not filtered through Kanon/Shannon's personas.

Once he was in a quasi-comfortable kneel, he brought the fly swatter hard down onto her exposed cheeks. She yelped in pleasure, and pushed her arse skywards. Good choice, the fly swatter stays in the bedroom.

A few minutes in and Keiichi realised something.

The fly swatter. It swats flies, not just girls’ arses. And what do flies eat?

Dog shit. That’s right, dog shit.

Oh great. Now there’s second or third hand dog shit on her arse. Fantastic.

He brought the swat down again, making sure to avoid any areas his face might be later on. He wouldn’t want dog shit in his face.

But hang on, why not?

How unhygienic could it be, compared to licking his girlfriend? He’d lick her arse, in fact, he’d actively enjoy it and so would she. How much worse could it be to lick a dogs arse? Think about that for a second. People wouldn’t eat a cheeseburger that had been on the floor next to a dog turd, but they’d lick someones arse? No, no, there’s something wrong with that.

In the heat of the moment, people would do some disgusting things with each other, much worse than licking a dog’s arse. A dog’s arse would be… well it would be a walk in the park in comparison (though you may be barred from the park afterwards).

He realised he was on autopilot now, his arms stroking, spanking and teasing Rena, his erection long since gone, retracted up inside him like a cat’s claw. But he was wondering how much worse it would be. You’d have to lift the tail up, that would be an obstacle. But then they don’t have cheeks to contend with.

He shouldn’t have a problem with it, but somehow it repulsed him. Why? Why was licking a human arse not repulsive, but a dog’s one was?

But then you go down that rabbit hole, that question as old as time itself; how many human arses would you lick? Not many in all honesty, you have to be quite intimate with them and the mood has to be right — not circumstances that occur with a dog, really. But if it did, it would still repulse him. Why?

Is it the species thing? If he were blindfolded and licked an anus, without knowing who or what it belonged to, would he be able to tell? If the blindfold came off, and Satoko was in front of him pulling her skirt back down— it doesn’t have to be her, any girl he found attractive — he’d laugh, shrug it off. But if the blindfold came off and there was a dog, say a Border Terrier, with a young, disinterested woman holding it aloft and a guy holding it’s tail up, a guy of about 42 — clean shaven but with a look in his eye that suggests he’s had a rough life — well in that scenario he’d be sick. Why? What is it about an attractive human’s a…

“What are you thinking, Keiichi-kun?” asked Rena.

“Erm…”

I love how you can know more about Yasu's character by analyzing how she narrates the first two episodes and how she portrays each character in the story. It's fascinating.

Kinzo in particular changes a lot. He starts off as a crazy lunatic (partly the fault of Natsuhi and Krauss who need to make it look like he's senile and won't come out) who doesn't give a shit about his family and wants to sacrifice them to demons. Then Tohya takes over and he becomes a bit more sympathetic while still being pretty crazy. He is practically absent from the two Ikuko episodes featuring her self-insert detective. Then we get his backstory in EP7 and we get to see his good ol' grandpa side in EP8, now that Tohya remembers more about him.

Battler admits that EP8 is a farce, but he insists that the Kinzo thing is actually true. The Kinzo in the halloween party is how he used to be when Battler was a kid, he was a good grandfather with some weird hobbies.

I've been thinking about why the When They Cry series is so special and what I've realized is that Ryukishi is an author that really taps into universal themes about the human condition in his thinking and writing. He doesn't just come up with interesting characters and situations (which he does do as well) but he actively grapples with why those situations come about and what it really means for the people that live within and through them.

For example, Higurashi delves deep into the themes of Friendship, Perception, Social Influence and Identity. These are all universal themes that any human has some intuitive sense of. You can tell through the stories and how he engages with them that he's actively trying to understand himself what friends are, why people are friends, what the limitations of friendship is and how friendship intersects with the other themes listed. Umineko them picks up a couples of these (notably Identity, which is emerging as a major theme across all WTC), but broadens the scope even further to things like Truth, Fantasy, Belief, Motivation, Reality and more. I can happily say that through this lens Ciconia is a marvel, building on what Umineko and Higurashi have started, while continuing to expand thematic scope even further to things like Life, Technology, Communication, etc.

To me, this shows why Ryukishi is such an amazing author. He's actively trying to understand and draw out the meaning of these universal themes in a way that only art and narrative can. I think this is why his work leaves such a huge impression on people that have an inclination to actively engage with it. He has the depth of a philosopher, but channels it as an author.

I think this also explains why his representation of LGBT characters can be so fulfilling, because he's not simply conjuring a character to fill a role. Instead he seeks to understand what it actually means to be in that position, what factors are bearing on them. He's thinking about what it's like to be in this position 'from the inside', just as he does for any of the ideas he chooses to explore. Because every story is tapping into the same universal themes that tie back to the human condition. LGBT people are just people, with an understandable set of influences on them. He treats them as such, and it shines through to people that are sensitive to actual representation rather then author who would treat them as a prop without the same depth of thought.
