Touhou and Pokemon aren't all that different.

1. Heavily influenced by Japanese Mythology
2. Lots of mystical creatures (Tengu, Oni, Pikachu, etc) and god-creatures

And their fanbases are the same!
1. Sexual fantasies about the creatures in the games
2. Nobody actually plays the games
3. They get kicked out of /a/ and /v/ on 4chan and forced to go their own happy boards, /jp/ and /vp/
