Flan just kinda being somewhere with the rest of the group and everyone being A-OK with it would just be plain odd, I can agree on that. But she does get out of her room on occasion and sneak around the Mansion sometimes.

I like to think that the wing frames themselves have a high iron content, and the crystals are some sort of metallic crystalline thing. Why does her body do that? I don't know. Don't care.

What I do know is she probably smells like rust and acid.
