I think the biggest argument against the shikigami Ran—although it's poking more at the hole in ZUN's writing—is why Chen exists if Ran struggles to act outside her programming. Programming Ran to 'create bakeneko shikigami - dote on her like a daughter' is too specific for Yukari to do; especially when the end result is a shiki that is too unreliable to do tasks. It's very rare that you see Ran depicted in any way like she is written in the retcon, and I don't know any doujins, comics, or anything that does. It's too late to change people's perceptions and the retcon comes from a magazine article which I guarantee only a small portion of touhou fans read, and doujin creators would just ignore it anyway. I know some people hate it because certain aspects are blown out of proportion, but I like the kind and doting fox mom depiction of her over supercomputer in the shape of a fox. It's a shame this is the direction ZUN is taking with her since it means we'll likely never see Ran with a character again, just a gap hag accessory and background prop.
