Both are pretty good and my personal favourite is the second game thanks to its world conquest campaign but the third game simply has more content so I'd suggest that one, both have an abundance of races and hero classes to chose from and allow for a lot of different combinations and roleplaying with your characters if that's what you're into, also there is this standalone free mod built upon the third game called the protectors mod, it adds a lot of shit like different subfactions to every race but it kinda changes the vanilla game, drastically I'd say, it's still pretty good and well worth checking out, there is a thread on /vst/ about the series right now, we make those pretty regulay so you are always free to come and ask whatever you want
