As for Tamamo no Mae and her tails, it could be that she started counting again after Hoji was cleansed from the Sesshoseki.

It's only a theory, though. Myths usually don't wrap up that way.

To be honest, if you really got to have that nine-tailed proof of quality... there just isn't a whole lot to choose from.

Not even the arguably most famous fox spirit of legend had nine tails - even though nearly every character based on her does!
