The haniwa warriors she is based on seem to hold a sword in a scabbard/sheath. So probably a sword, would have been nice if ZUN added a sprite or her unsheathing her sword or something.

Dunno katanas... depend a bit on the context for the size so I guess it could kinda count as one.
Don't know much about how swords of the Kofun period looked like but I think most finds were also slim but thick one edged swords similar to katanas.
