Ryuukishi was supposed to be a niche and obscure author, but his works became super popular because of the decent Higurashi anime that shat all over the novel's tone and filled the whole thing with over the top crazy faces.

That's why Alchemist, DEEN and to some extent the manga have always emphasized this crazy face bullshit in their remakes/adaptations, even though it doesn't really originate from the VNs themselves. It feels pretty tacked on in many Higurashi scenes and completely out of place anywhere in Umineko. The original version of Umineko only had witches making troll faces (which has NOTHING to do with this cringy crazy face shit) and an autistic expressionless kid saying creepy shit that is meant to be weird/off-putting rather than scary or shocking.

After having basically everything spelled out for you in EP7 and rereading the earlier episodes, it's impossible not to realize how the crimes were carried out and who the culprit is. Hell, the MAN from 19 years ago, the fact that Yasu is clearly raised as a GIRL, the heavy focus on romance and all the talk about the golden land being a metaphor for death/Heaven makes it painfully obvious that the culprit did all of this because he got his body fucked up as a baby and would rather kill himself than let his love interests know about his secret and reject him.

By the way, it's all Genji's fault for sending Yasu to a Christian orphanage where they feed him bullshit about the afterlife and giving him access to a bomb that can easily get rid of all of his problems so he doesn't have to face them.
