This pic probably sums it up pretty well.
Chinese: Tons of different pitches and accents make the entry level hard. But if you got that down, the rest is easy since pronunciation of a syllable carries over from word to word. (One prof I met just sat down and grinded those for a few weeks and never had problems afterwards)
Japanese: Depending on your native language, not much of a problem early on, but will eventually come back at you if you want to sound like a native speaker, so you better learn pitch accent from early on if you want to sound like a native speaker.
