I think you're forgetting that those kinds of plants grow in green realms as well, they just don't eliminate all normal plants. As noted below:

I looked through the whole section on dark elementals in World Guide 2 and nothing states they create dark mamono realms, only that they create mamono realms. Presumably the type is dependent on the particular nature they and their covenanter (and other monsters in the area) have.

On the other hand, there are some big benefits that come with achieving the dark elemental status:

Plus their presence helps make the land less dangerous:

If a volcano erupts, then the lava will flow in a way that avoids towns and other such places where people and monsters live. It's not that the dark elementals are intentionally helping out. Unbeknownst to them, nature is doing it on its own. This is because of an effect that occurs when the elementals which embody nature itself become dark elementals, gain power, and become partial to humans and monsters. We can say it is proof of the enormity of the power of dark elementals and their huge influence over nature.

So in conclusion:

1. Dark elementals do not default to creating dark realms.
2. Dark elementals become able to have babies.
3. Dark elementals make the world around them safer.

On a related thought, the whole "can now get pregnant" thing also makes it seem likely the "continually joined" part of the dark gnome's entry is a exaggeration (though I guess that could depends on how they give birth and raise their children).
