I know Ryu has worked as a CPS worker but it still blows me away how he nailed a lot of the abused child mindset. As an addict in recovery, I've met a ton of people who struggle because they never grew out of those childhood coping habits. Some are either delusional (Maria's magic obsession) or set themselves up for failure, having impossible expectations of themselves, which perpetuates the self-devaluing that children learn to handle the fact that their needs aren't getting met. The world being awful is harder to accept than viewing yourself as flawed and having it be your own fault (Satoko thinking she needs to stay strong for Satoshi, enduring mistreatment)
