In my first run, I was lucky enough that the fire support (all 4 Kongou sisters) usually either take out almost everything save hard targets (so that Kitakami/Ooi takes out the survivors in the torpedo phase), or they take too much damage to deal a significant amount of damage.

It's not a sustainable approach though... 500 oil/ammo on top of refueling my 1st fleet is just... painful.
