The initial discussion between Toujirou and Seshat feels quite poignant during a re-read, but I still don't understand them I think.
>Military might is a necessary evil in Toujirou's mind. It can do good and it can do evil, the extremes humanity have chosen are both part of the problem (hating and despising the idea of war in B3W and having it glorified and loved in A3W). What matters is that we should accept the fact that it's an imperfect solution we really have not outgrown, we need to keep 'discussing' as we find a better way.
>While he is somehow puzzled by this, Seshat has a more cynical point: humans simply cannot, at least in huge groups, think without extremes. Sure she agrees with the idea that the masses need to be 'trained', but such training will surely be harsh (How? By experiencing a fate of destruction over and over?). After all, debate has lost all of its meaning: It's not a way to grow and learn anymore, it's merely an act to destroy what you do not agree with, sheep mentality is a given. And so, since humanity is unable to guide itself, it needs to follow a path laid down by someone else.
>Ultimately, even though Toujirou somehow shares this conclusion with her, he wishes for a sort of perfect world where humanity can truly accept all viewpoints (and by this finally engage in true 'debate').
So what is it? Ultimately, he too will exploit this fault in the human debate system to influence the direction the world is going in, that's exactly what his Order does. Is he just resigned to the destiny the Kings want while harboring a vague hope that stuff will head into a different direction?
Pic related is of particular interest to me because it almost seems like a reference to the endless discussions our gauntlet heroes have in the public bath over and over again. They debate, sure, and at least superficially seem to reach a consensus, and yet they cannot find a valid answer to the problem in front of them at all, they simply keep clinging to the current ideology of the Walls of Peace and how it's beautiful and right, ultimately achieving nothing.
