I agree with you - though I had thought that "elves" were originally an Icelandic concept - am I misremembering? In my head, the idea of elves is originally an Icelandic mythological concept which was exported to the rest of Europe. Perhaps I am muddled on this.
Aside from that - Localisation makes me irrationally mad. Yeah okay, I learned Japanese, so I get that not everything 100% translates over and so some leeway is necessary and so forth, however, I don't think that therefore one must make everyone speak like some Californian and discuss only things that some Californian might understand at the lowest common denomination.
If the purpose of language is to impart an idea, then the purpose of translation is to capture that idea in a format which can be understood by the audience. Capturing the idea is key; changing the idea into some other similar concept is outside of the scope of the task at hand, regardless of how tempting this may be to some translator.
