I wouldn't exactly say keeping chickens around is a cheap source of protein, but if you've got a lot of extra land and a place for them to sleep safely they can really forage and eat shit on their own, and you get to eat their delicious ass babies.

That and we got enough land that on really bad days I can just go inna woods for a few hours and shoot something to eat. .22 ammunition is cheaper than a fucking pack of soda.
