Perhaps, regardless how she came into Yukari's "possession", the main reason Ran stays and serves Yukari is simply because it's what she wants to do.

900 years is a long time. Ran has had plenty of time to be many things. Among the known parts, a wild animal and a feared and revered mythical beast. Among the favourite options, a sage, a seductress, a noble lady, a lover, wife and mother (maybe husband and father on occasion, who knows).
Even with the Yakumo household really being nowhere near as idyllic as fanon makes it out to be, perhaps for Ran it's like finally coming home.

Well... foxes are smart as hell and not particularly afraid of humans. If you live close to nature, you're going to be dealing with foxes on a regular basis. "Close" being relative here - bumped into the occasional bewildered fox in the middle of the city now and then. It's no wonder stories and legends pop up. Even the culture at Gobekli Tepe had some kind of fox god, though given how little remains after them there's no wonder theirs isn't as well known as Inari and the likes.

As for the latter part... should that really be explored?
