I was thinking of making a Touhou VN, but then I realized I wouldn't be able to effectively make money off of it.
Say what you will, but I think that's a big factor. You need to look at such projects through a business lens. New businesses, just like 4chan projects, have a high failure rate.
A majority of people don't want to make things just for internet fame. But I'm sure many would be influenced to if they knew they could make enough money off of it to carve out a meager hikikomori life. Many of our favorite VNs and games that were made by guys like us charged money for them. The most successful ones certainly did.

My view is that you should charge a price for anything, as those that would complain about it and not pay will just pirate it anyway.

If we make something, we need to think up something entirely new to ourselves.

It's not just minting coins, I'm pretty sure bank notes where depicted. And one can safely assume Reimu's head is not on these bills, as she won't need to collect donation if she was responsible for printing the money.
