I didn't even go that far. Literally just rawdogged it with a wired Xbox 360 controller by using the steam desktop configuration tool to map my left thumbstick to arrow keys, right trigger to 'z', B to 'x', left trigger to 'LShift', Y to 'LCtrl', and pause to 'ESC'. I also have A mapped to 'z' (mostly for menu navigation/for when my trigger finger gets tired) and X mapped to 'c', respectively, but few games use the C button, so it's mostly vestigial. Also, make sure you have your general controller settings set up beforehand.
