That would only make sense if there were something to channel that created interest onto, but as of now there have only been goods for those in events overseas.
You're right that the "old" goods would still sell, but the sales would diminish as not everyone buys everything they can and when it comes to the point where they have to chose they'll more likely pick the new thing.
Also, I don't need to tell you this happens more often as more merch makes it into the market; which would be the case in this scenario.

Also I still find strange that artists miss that the costume is supposed to make her hips look wider, so instead they just draw Ai-chan with very very wide hips.
