I have a 500GB Samsung drive from around 2007, still works fine.
This is a 2TB HDD drive from WD I bought a bit over 2 years ago.
Few months ago the number of bad sectors was 1. I recently bought a 4TB external drive from them though.
I had a Seagate external HDD for quite some time and it stopped working rcently. Luckily the drive itself is fine. The adapter (for the power/USB) just went bad.
55GB SSD from Corsair has been in use for more than 5 years I think, also fine.

Just check your drives regularly with something like CrystalDiskInfo
