For example, rather than a paragraph where you describe the guy's uneven facial hair, you can have another character take a quick jab at how he can't figure out how to shave properly as they're doing something else.

direct narration:

You have a detailed, direct description. You have prefaced the next paragraph by letting the reader know more about this character.

Mix it up. Sometimes it's good to dedicate time to being descriptive all at once, sometimes it's better to keep things moving and leave certain things vague, or give the details gradually.
