The Japanese r is somewhere in between the English l and d. In some words it sounds closer to one than the other. If you read the manga Chi's Sweet Home (a manga about a kitten), you will sometimes see d sounds written as r sounds (e.g. だ becoming ら) in order to represent the very childish style of speech that the title character uses.

便利 is a な-adjective. 「便利な物。」, etcetera.

There's no accent, your ears are just not attuned enough to Japanese to differentiate the d and r sounds yet.
