Begun to recognise recently that many people can't tell the difference between "grimdark" and "dark and edgy". A shame since they are entirely different things, but also something that little can be done about since the definitions of where exactly both end and something else begins are fluid and largely subjective.

However, happy to see that /jp/ seems to have a firm idea of GRIMDARK that hasn't changed much since 2008.

Come to think of it, fox spirits in some form are pretty much the sharpest knives in the drawer in most branches of East Asian folklore, though Japan - because Japan is being Japan - takes the concept to the extreme. Even at two tails, a kitsune is frighteningly intelligent from a human perspective.
Just exactly that contributed to bringing down Tamamo no Mae in her day - she was too intelligent to fit in convincingly among her victims, yet too young and inexperienced to realise it.

Unclear. It could be discussed, but it should be said right away that since nearly all legends of fox spirits predate microbiology and come out of a time when it was firmly believed illnesses were caused by spiritual rather than physical uncleanliness, it can't be discussed with any hope for answers accurate in the original context.

However, Kitsune are very capable of intentionally spreading disease as a weapon. Unintentionally remains unknown.
