Oh, I wasn't being sarcastic either. If he prefers DoDonPachi to Touhou, it's probably not because of the scoring system. (Though Ketsui it's more than possible.) So it's gotta be the difficulty, and Lunatic Touhou has a very nice difficulty pace.

Hmm, even if you move around in shot types, it shouldn't be all that bad for your practice. Most of the game is in the enemy shots, not yours, though you certainly do have to take yours into account in how you dodge theirs.
