Two things I think, our generation grew up and had little space for whimsy and such left, many probably just got filtered into mainstream society when they hit uni/had to find jobs
The second one is that communities and fandoms got atomized, everyone closed themselves off into their own little friend group bubbles and stopped sharing ideas between them in a major way as was done in the past. With more avenues to filter the internet for things one finds disagreeable and block people they would have otherwise be forced to interact with I think discourse became stale and inspired less people overall to be creative and make content.
But maybe I am mistaken.
