I'm trying to reconcile my love of otaku culture with my increasingly anarchistic worldview. In one sense, "otaku" is still a refusenik label of sorts. Doujin works are something driven primarily by passion, traded in a self-sustaining sphere. There is a strong underground collective spirit. But I think most "otaku" goods these days are something of a consumerist distraction: meant to keep us fat and happy, and never ask why. I've been to Akiba a few times and it just made me sick more than anything else.

I don't want to lose interest, but when I load up /jp/, scan the threads, and realize that we are pretty much defined by what we consume, I get depressed.
