Okay now I play a lot of Dodonpachi but holy shit you really could have chosen a better example. The only trace elements of "plot" were thrown in as a silly explanation as to why you're playing the same stages again.

It's more of a case of "hate the game because of the fanbase" than because of popularity. A lot of people see the absolutely retarded gaiafag fanbase that touhou has and tell themselves they hate the games without ever giving them a chance. There's also a lot of bad/mediocre stg players who think Touhou is "too easy" despite being, you know, terrible, because they want to look like HARDCORE GAMERZ on the internet.
