She prepares to attack, but as I am now she cannot even hope to hurt me. To lash out would scatter me, but I would feel no pain or receive injury from it. It is not until I’ve returned to my original form that her blows can have any effect at all. I allow myself a moment of laughter, mirroring the words she used when she believed she held the advantage, “When in Rome, was it?”

Then, I launch myself at her, the odds in my favor. Hundreds of arrows, swords and knives fly from the walls to pierce her flesh. She attempts to swat them away, but fails to see through and recognize the intent of my attack in her bewilderment. The projectiles break apart like ash as she impacts them, but the sooty mess that remains clings to her skin like glue. The more she fights back, the more the soot begins to accumulate and stick together. I realize that at this point I have effectively immobilized an Oni. No simply task by any means, but they were always weak against underhanded attacks. My surprise stems only from how easy it felt to have accomplished this feat.

But I will not be hasty. She is still an Oni child, and possesses the strength of a thousand human men at the very least. Until I am sure that I have captured her I cannot allow myself to take shape. I take in what little residual energy leaks out of her as the soot begins to invade her body. Unlike with Okuu, however, I’ve little desire to make this enjoyable. My hunger will not wait. I descend upon the girl like a pack of ravenous vultures.
