Are they pursuing a man on land? If so then the manticore would still be a greater threat. Umi osho aren't agile on land at the best of times, and the raging mushrooms would work them into such a frenzy that they'd easily fall over each other and end up stuck on their backs thanks to their shells.

Yes the profile states they can shoot the spines, just as the manticores of mythology could (albeit the book profile seems to leave this detail out). Clearly whoever drew that art wasn't aware of this.

Presumably a new spine would grow to replace any shot out, only question would be how long it would take. I imagine a manticore might normally have a spine or two in develop right below each one we see, which can slide into place after the external one is fired, and its only when they are all shot that they have to wait for new ones to grow.
