You know, when I went to an anime convention, the first thing I was on the lookout for was Yukkuri merchandise, including plushies, as well as any sort of Touhou stuff.

It's a trade off of sorts, I suppose. It depends on how much risk you're willing to take. Mainstream anime sell better in general, but people like me specifically reward sellers who cater to niche stuff we want that aren't easy to find. I probably would have bought any yukkuri item I found as long as it wasn't massively overpriced. Similarly, when I see people draw Touhou in the Artist Gallery, I buy them. I almost never buy anime, especially if it's widely available.

I'm not saying you should focus only on niche /jp/ material, but definitely keep that in mind and get a certain amount, and experiment. It depends on the people at your location. Don't forget that the more niche it is, the more loyal the buyers might be. If there was a Touhou store nearby, I'd totally break my pseudo-NEET lifestyle to visit it regularly.
