Anyone here have experience with trying to get Japanese working with Vista?

All of my VN installs are showing up as a bunch of random characters as well as any text within install prompts and display windows that accompany them.

I just upgraded from XP and all I used to have to do was install the language pack from the CD. Now I can't figure out what to do as the only thing available in language settings is keyboard support.
