First I find a sprite I'm sticking with, and then look for portraits based on that. I think you're on the right track looking at VNs, but look at ones that have dialogue portraits for the characters. They often have a whole set of the same fullbody portrait with only the expression changed, so your work is done for you. Also try nukige CG dumps.
