Maybe , but it definitely was the part that got me hooked to the story, cemented by the letter moment in the study with that kino track which I always forget. Same with the little history dumps or political alliances and the like in Higurashi. But I agree with you, it's clearly not the main strength behind his works. It would be however vastly preferable to chuuni shit since there won't be any mystery for us to solve as readers.
