>it's mass market consumerism that's what determines a true fan, otaku, weaboo, or whatever you'd like to call it now
It's always been this way.
Buying 100 copies of a DVD of their favorite anime. Or 100 discs of the same single for their favorite idol. Those are extreme examples but they are iconic in that being otaku is basically being one more peg in the consumerist world. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean Otacool™ so that you can show this off in your favorite imageboard of choice or be featured in Danny Choo's books. It's just being otaku usually involves buying stuff that is pointless from a practical standpoint just for the sake of reinvesting in the producer. Buying VNs on Steam is just a mild case of that for people that aren't bleeding money since you can just pirate it, usually. And Steam is an easy platform reachable in the West to do so since not everyone can import.

>Also, MG gave options to turn off scat and guro, so we're seeing some attempt to appease a wider audience
Clockup always did this on their releases with their twist on the YU-RIS engine. Their custom engine is one of the reasons I enjoy Clockup VNs so much even though stuff with Hamashima usually ends up breaking my heart.
