The original backgrounds do a much better job of making the locations look mysterious and alien. And since they are pictures, they often capture random details that are interesting to look at and wouldn't be present in a clear drawing made from scratch where every little thing is deliberately placed there.

Same with the sprites. Whenever Ryuukishi needed to portray a certain emotion that wouldn't fit any of the previous sprites... he would just draw a new face for the character. That's how Higurashi and Umineko got new facial expressions in each episode. He would just draw the perfect face for the situation and add it to the list of available faces. Having some professional artist reproduce his sprites in their own style doesn't always fit, because the faces will inevitably be different in some way no matter how faithful the new artist tries to draw them. It's a huge problem with the console Higurashi sprites, because they fail at subtlety and often look out of place.
