>I remember people here saying even KC thought it went a bit too dark, but was there ever a source for that or just hearsay?

More inference. KC has mentioned how extreme Lescatie's case was, but he's to my knowledge never outright said he thought it was too dark. What he has done is present more nuanced views and explanations of things in subsequent settings books, focusing on just how "normal" life with monsters can be and how even in the setting itself the lifestyle of monsters and monster realms is often misunderstood by outsiders. We see this heavily shown in World Guide 2 where Saphirette and the Wandering Scholar often present conflicting viewpoints, with KC as I recall stating in a Q and A at some point afterward that Saphirette is more reliable than the Wandering Scholar when it comes to everyday monster behavior and culture.

KC's also gone on record that the Wandering Scholar as a character in the setting does write the profiles and books he authors in a way that often makes the monsters seem more debauched or threatening than they actually are in practice, despite him trying to be unbiased. He likewise has noted that many of the Scholar's writings are not inaccurate so much as incomplete, since he tends to only observe a given monster or area for a relatively short time before departing.

For instance, in World Guide 1 the Scholar states that the origin King and Queen of Lescatie have gone to their room after the queen monsterized and haven't come out since. But then in the Fallen Maidens gaiden the Wandering Scholar's apprentice reveals that after the king had "rejuvenated" from all that time with the queen the couple returned to public life and details the many things they have accomplished. Fallen Maidens gaiden likewise did a lot to explain how Wilmarina's personality and behavior had not really become as selfish or one dimensional as World Guide 1 seemed to indicate, noting how Wilomarina's words of not caring about anything but her husband often don't match her actions where she is still a responsible and reliable person.

So a lot of the talk in the profiles about a given monster couple doing nothing but having sex and sleeping and such might be more accurately read as that is what they were doing at the time the scholar was observing them.

You're speaking of much earlier translations. World Guide 1 was translated by the same person that is doing the English translations now.

I don’t know how people can continue to ask this when we have the world guides.

To a degree maybe, but not to the point of actual damage or discomfort. To quote World Guide 1:

>Aside from spell casting, small amounts of mamono mana are naturally continually released from the monsters' bodies. Monsters are always in a state where they're draped in mamono mana. This mamono mana that is released is used by them unconsciously for various purposes. When they have sex with a man, the energy serves to protect the man's body. No matter how roughly and how long they have sex, the man's body never enters an abnormal state worse than fatigue, and he can never die due to sex. It also ensures that the man won't be harmed by the monster's horns, scales, etc. If the man touches the tip of a pointed horn or scale, the mamono mana covering the horn or scale gently pushes him back with a feeling like the touch of soft skin.

>For example, the physique, and hair color, etc. of a medusa may vary, but the common traits of a medusa, snake hair and the lower body of a snake, match up. Also, many individuals basically have a lonely, stubborn personality.

You'd have to learn the body language though, she might twitch it like a cat when irritated.

Maybe its like a rattlesnake's rattle where each time she sheds she adds a new layer to the tail club. Old medusa sometimes have to carve/chip off parts of it if it gets too heavy.

But she's not a tiger girl. Anyway, lets keep in mind that to a degree monster physiques are allowed to vary, even if most individuals do have a similar physique:

>In the introductions from the encyclopedia only one individual is portrayed in the illustrations, but of course they have individual differences. Physique, facial features, clothing, etc. things that aren't set by the race's inherent special traits, vary depending on the individual. However, from a human standpoint, in the case of individuals of the same race, they often feel like they have a similar atmosphere about them for some reason, and since there are a lot of points that are similar or matching in terms of looks and personality, someone knowledgeable can distinguish the differences between races with similar forms, and even someone with little knowledge can probably sense it: “Are these two the same race?” “Although they look similar, I think they're different races.” The illustrations in the monster girl encyclopedia are the average forms of those races in general. Basically, it's okay to think that most individuals look similar to the illustration.

I know this is an old post, but it doesn't seem anyone posted the actual settings statement on what the illustrations for the profiles represent. So here is the relevant paragraph from World Guide 1:

>In the other volume, “Monster Girl Encyclopedia I”, various races of monsters were introduced in detail with illustrations.

But note that KC saying many amazoness are muscular does not contradict this. Many doesn't have to mean a majority or an average.

Why? Because they're so powerful? That may work in some settings, but not in KC's. That's because usually the original race is also supposed to be the most common one, and echidnas are anything but common.

Basically echidnas are extremely powerful, specialized mutations of lamias.
