I think there's room for flexibility given that all the characters have a wide range of proportions depending on the source material.

I totally agree about the appeal coming from the fact that it's an intimate part of a character you're emotionally attached to. And while I like exaggeration, I still can understand how it might be seen as cheapening the look by not staying true to the original. That's also part of the reason why official erotica is so lewd.
