I remember when I was 6/7 years old and learning English for the first time. I felt the same. I just repeated phrases I've heard on TV and in songs knowing only vaguely what they meant. It took me years to become this fluent. I wish I could learn Japanese through my native language directly, but I have to do it via English so it's nasty because my native language (Croatian) functions differently, so it goes kind of like this kana>reading out loud in my mind>meaning in Croatian>answer in English
