Considering the distances involved, I don't think he would've made it even if he rushed south as soon as he got the very first distress call at 8am before Nimitz intervened. Morrison says the very fastest of his battleships might've made it, but it seems a stretch they could've both made it and found Kurita. It took the better part of a day to even catch Ozawa's bait, and by midday 25th Kurita had (smartly) backed the fuck out and was on his way through San Bernardino. That's probably part of why he felt able to mope - he was already too late. The mistakes had already been made the afternoon and evening of the 24th, in the same way the Kidou Butai was already screwed before the supposed "fateful five minutes".

The return map makes it look like Nishimura or Shima managed to get through the strait and retreat with Kurita when in fact they both turned back (Shima turning after seeing Nishimura get fucked in front of him). Shiranui of Shima's section sank much further northeast, off Panay, because she was looking for Kinu and Uranami.
