Even short beards come across as cool/edgy/wild here IMO (except for that gay soul patch chin beard a lot of Japanese guys have, that's apparently okay). It definitely amplifies your gaijin-ness which could be good or bad depending on the situation. I personally switch between stubble and clean shaven.

Just my personal experience, but the otakus here are even more standoffish and awkward than the average Japanese person which is really saying something. I guess if you managed to make a close otaku friend they might invite you to stuff but even then maybe not, from their perspective it would be like inviting their special needs friend to the weekly D&D session, awkward for them and potentially annoying for everyone else
