I have started studying about two months ago and there is simply a whole lot of ground to cover. I use Anki for 2k6k, vocabulary from learning resources like Tae Kim (and cards to review the sentences in Tae Kim as well as conjugation tables) and the whole variety of stuff you find in the Kodansha Learner's Course. I'm also studying Russian but I only have one deck for it to which I add unknown words I find while reading.
I'm sure many people think I'm wasting my time with Anki but I know there is a limited number of cards and according to my calculations I should be done with everything I want before reading in about 3 months which is just fine with me. Laying a strong foundation is important to me as I want to be proficient in Japanese and I don't mind spending the hours in Anki.
