I dunno. Satoko pretty much killed her parents, was adopted and beaten by her uncle, her brother disappeared, and she dies being tortured to death by Shion.

Yet Satoko takes pleasure in playing with her friends and bullying Keiichi. Bernkastel take pleasure in watching people falling into despair before killing each others. I'd say that makes Bernkastel a little less sympathetic than Satoko.
And there's also the fact that there are pictures depicting Satoko getting spanked.

But this is how it works. Accept it or not, but the personality affects one's opinion of a girl. If Bernkastel acted like Maria, I would find her annoying but I wouldn't want to spank her. Especially once the game starts detailling her backstory and how she was left alone most of the time with only her plushie toy to comfort her.
