Idols get peanuts in money. Most of their money comes from doing jobs outside with TV networks, gravure, magazine interviews etc. It's important for a new idol to get a good management team. AKB48 simply provides them with a popularity platform with which to get noticed so they can do other jobs and get paid properly. However if you have AKS management which is offered to every girl when they join, AKS will often stop girls from doing work outside of promoting AKB.
